OBJECTIVE: To "180" an Old Cruiser

During my last few years of working on motorcycles, I have fallen in love with them and the rebuilding process. This Goldwing being my first project, I decided to go big. My goal was to buy a bike that would teach me as much as possible, and boy, did I learn! After buying the bike at the beginning of my six-month internship in Charlotte, North Carolina, I set a few goals for myself—first and foremost being to have the bike up and running before my return to Ohio to finish my Industrial Design degree. This project was unique because of its many constraints—primarily, learning about motorcycles by working on an old machine whose parts were difficult to find.

OBSTACLES.

I overcame challenges in locating parts by contacting local salvage yards to find best parts available on a student's budget. In the process, I got to know some interesting, veteran "motorcycle dudes" who loved bikes just as much as I did. Whenever necessary, they coached me through the biggest hurdling of the rebuilding process, including rebuilding the starter motor and cleaning the carburetor.

TAKE-AWAYS.

Through rebuilding this bike, I learned patience, how to work on a student's budget and within a strict deadline, as well as how to find and communicate with experts who helped me tackle the dirtiest, most knuckle-bloodying and "hair-pulling" jobs. No matter the issue at hand, my Goldwing has taught me to smile about the challenges, laugh at my mistakes, and enjoy every stage of the ride.
