Objective Design a Hedge Trimmer for the VPX Line

As an industrial design student at The Ohio State, I designed a product based on an existing branding language. The result was the Black and Decker 20’’ Hedge Trimmer, based on Black and Decker's current VPX Visual Branding Language.

The VPX line has a simple design with a clean, functional form as well as a color pallet including red, black, and grey. The product itself integrates 7-volt Lithium Ion batteries that hold a high energy density battery with no memory effect. These batteries are up to 60% lighter than Ni-Cad powered tools. The VPX line allows smaller hand-held tools to use a single 7-volt battery. Larger tools can use two batteries, creating a stronger 14-volt power supply. This is a common voltage for a more powerful tool.

Form Exploration

The goal was to create a visually exciting form that addressed the product's function. I designed every surface with purpose that better served the battery and the product's ventilation. I also focused on finding the proper color proportions that aligned with the company's visual branding language.

Logo / Ventillation

Designing this hedge trimmer challenged me to keep as close to Black and Decker's visual branding language as possible while creating a product that does not fit in with the company's current set of products. The location of the company's logo as well as the product's ventilation were key in the design process. I decided to incorporate the exhaust into the bottom of the product, place the ventilation intake along the edge of the badge, and add an orange accent piece to visually connect the tool with other company products.
